leftend 02/17/99 Toy Fair '99 rightend

Now that this year's Toy Fair has come and gone, a few interesting tidbits of Com-related info has slipped out to the public. First, we have a snippet of the official press release from Tiger concerning the Toy Fair, specifically the game.com section:

Toy Fair Logo
game.com

game.com.pocket pro is the new, more compact version of the game.com portable game system. It's smaller (and cooler). But don't be fooled by its size - game.com.pocket pro packs in all the features of the original: incredible graphics and animation, groundbreaking sound and music, and a revolutionary touch-screen interface. In addition, game.com.pocket pro sports an all-new backlit screen for play-in-the-dark fun. It also contains built-in software, including a phone directory, calendar, calculator and specially designed touch-screen version of the card-game classic, Solitaire.

Unheard of until now, game.com.pocket pro will be able to link to a PC via Tiger Web-Link that will allow owners to log on to the www.game.com website to unlock and download hidden characters and features for added play. You can also upload scores to show how you compare to other game.com players around the world.

An exciting library of game carts for the system boasts such smash-hits as Resident Evil 2, Duke Nukem 3D and Sonic Jam. New titles in the works for 1999 include: NASCAR Racing, Metal Gear Solid, Frogger, Centipede, Command & Conquer Red Alert , Deer Hunter, Mulligan's Golf Challenge, Scrabble, Monopoly, Castlevania and Holyfield Boxing. All carts are compatible with both the original game.com system and game.com.pocket pro. Sugg. retail: $49.99; Feb. '99; Ages 8 & up.

About the only new information available out of the release is the announcement of a Deer Hunter title and a name for the previously-mentioned golf game, to be called Mulligan's Golf Challenge.

We also have a statement from TigerGCom made on the newsgroup that shares some juicier info:

Well as most of you know, Toy Fair is now over, and I will give you a little bit of info on what was released, shown, etc.

I assume everyone is familiar with the new multi-colored cases of the Macintosh IMAC systems. Well game.com will also be releasing 6 new translucent color pocketpro units. Now dont get confused. These are colored units, not color screens. The do look very cool.

WCW: Well this game is in full production. Graphics look very cool. Those of you who watch WCW on TV will be happy to hear that Hollywood Hogan and Diamond Dallas Page stopped by the showroom, and gave their thumbs up!!

Furbyland: Well the com gets its first original title! Furbyland, based on of course Tiger's Furby. This is in early development. Not sure if this is going to be a side/topdown type of game, or a RPG, or both, but this will be the first true Mario-like title in the game.com library.

More info to follow.........

My personal take on colored pocketpro systems is mixed. While I like the idea of having a partially translucent Com "shell", I am kinda disheartened that we're now on our third system design and have very few games to play on them. Anyways, I haven't seen anyone stress translucent enuf - apparently we'll be able to see the innards of the Com thru the shell, which is (again) rather cool. So, what will we be calling the game.com version 3? My suggestion: the iCom :)

WCW: I'm just too old for this sorta thing. I understand that these games are quite popular and that a good wrestling game could help out the Com immensely, but beyond that I have little to add :)

Furbyland: a Mario-esque side-scroller would be a welcome addition to the Com's library of games, and using Furby as the de facto game.com mascot is a pretty good idea IMO. Note the "early development" statement, however, so don't expect this game anytime soon.
