Amber's Wings
This spell, a creation of Amber Tidewater, was designed to be a "more lively" replacement for the common Fly spell, but was immediately rejected due to the strenuous nature of the new spell. This spell causes the caster or touched individual to grow wings capable of flight. The wings sprout from the shoulders of the individual in question, being either feathery wings or batlike fleshy wings, angelic and demonic respectively in appearance. The wingspan is appropriate to the size of the recipient, but never growing larger than an 21 foot wingspan. By flapping these wings energetically, the recipient may produce enough lift to fly. The wings enable MV24, Class C. This maneuverability allows for a turning of 90 degrees per round, and does not allow the ability to hover. The recipient may perform attacks while flying (as per the Arial Combat rules of the DMG), but the buffeting nature of this flight prevents any spellcasting. The use of the wings is very tiring to the recipient. The recipient cannot carry more than 50 pounds and remain airborne. Consider flight with these wings to be as strenuous as jogging - the recipient can automatically fly for a number of rounds equal to his Constitution score, and may continue with a successful Con check for each additional round. A failed check results in the recipient being too tired to flap the wings further, and must rest for as many rounds as spent flapping. If a Con check is failed in midair, the recipient begins to fall, but luckily the wings cab be used to glide and slow one's descent. While gliding, the wings enable MV18, Class E. For every 10 feet fell, 50 feet of horizontal movement occurs. Note that gliding can be performed at any time, tired or no, and does not produce fatigue itself. The wings are an actual physical part of the body while present, and are subject to normal attacks. They are AC10, and damage done to the wings is subtracted from the recipient's hit points. Any damage of 10 hit points or more specifically directed at the wings results in their being unable to perform, broken and mangled. The wings require a large area to maneuver within, and stir up a strong wind when taking off or landing. The wings can be folded close to the back when not in use, allowing the recipient some freedom of movement. The recipient has control over the wing's movements, so more esoteric uses for the wings might be employed (to swat an object out of someone's hands, etc). The material component is, like the Fly spell, a wing feather of any bird. |
